Belize's REDD+ Safeguards Information System (SIS)
Welcome to Belize's REDD+ Safeguards Information System (SIS). This SIS aims to provide the country's vision on REDD+ implementation and to demonstrate how the Cancun Safeguards for REDD+ are being addressed and respected throughout the REDD+ design and implementation process, which is aligned with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) requirements and the relevant national and international legal framework.
SIS objective
Belize's REDD+ SIS was designed in a step-by-step approach, starting with the National Interpretation of the Cancun Safeguards in a participatory manner, analysing the existing legal framework in the context of this interpretation and then identifying additional information on how the safeguards are respected. It is based on the requirements established by the UNFCCC, the National Safeguards Interpretation, and the country’s Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) and the resulting Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF), developed in 2021 under the framework of the World Bank' Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF). This approach ensures that social and environmental risks identified through the SESA are directly considered in Belize's REDD+ SIS.
The REDD+ Safeguards Advisory Committee
The REDD+ Safeguards Advisory Committee has been created to strengthen the transparency and confidence of the entire SIS and REDD+ programme performance, by allowing the intervention of different stakeholders with monitoring and advisory capacities for Belize's SIS.
