REDD+ Safeguards Advisory Committee

The creation of the Safeguards Advisory Committee is one of the results of Belize's efforts to strengthen the transparency and quality of the information provided in the REDD+ SIS and to contribute to the overall performance and multi-stakeholder representation of the national REDD+ implementation.

Role of the Committee

The Committee is an advisory body with the capacity to:

  • Monitor and complement the information to be published in the SIS and delivered by the SIS Secretariat (see How the SIS works here);
  • Present the stance of multi-stakeholder consultation on different matters consulted by the SIS Board or Secretariat;
  • Represent and provide a space for different non-governmental actors to raise their concerns regarding the implementation of the REDD+ safeguards.

Sectors represented

This multi-stakeholder working group was created to serve as a valuable asset of the country’s REDD+ approach to coordinate various stakeholder inputs in validation/consultation processes related to REDD+, ensuring an equitable representation of most relevant stakeholders (particularly representatives of indigenous peoples and local communities, the private sector, and academia). In all cases, a gender and vulnerability approach was adopted in the selection of representatives.
